Kolkata. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has once again sought clarification from Jadavpur University for not following the standards set by it to prevent ragging.
In a message on Monday evening, the UGC asked JU to respond within the next 15 days, university insiders said.
The commission has also sought clarification from the university authorities on the steps taken so far to stop ragging amid the ragging-related death of a freshman student in a JU hostel on August 10.
A JU insider said, “The UGC has also given some suggestions to prevent the phenomenon of ragging within the university campus. The matter is expected to be discussed in detail in the working committee meeting of the university on Tuesday.”
It is learned that the UGC’s latest demand for clarification is based on the findings of the commission’s four-member team that visited the JU campus earlier this month to review the situation.
However, JU insiders admitted that differing opinions among various stakeholders are major obstacles in strictly adhering to the commission’s anti-ragging norms within the university campus.
“Particularly the initiative of the university authorities to include ex-servicemen in the internal security team of JU has faced opposition from a section of the student unions. Although the work of installing 29 CCTV cameras equipped with AI has finally started, there was a lot of controversy regarding where to install them. (IANS)
