Teachers Recruitment Scam: The basic planning of the multi-crore school recruitment case was conducted at the West Bengal Board of Primary Education (WBBPE) office, involving Trinamool Congress MLA Manik Bhattacharya and party confidant Sujay Krishna Bhadra. ED has made this allegation.
This was mentioned in the ED’s remand letter for Bhadra who was arrested by the central probe agency on Tuesday night after a 12-hour marathon grilling. Sources said regular meetings between Bhattacharya and Bhadra used to take place at the WBBPE office where they would bring lists of candidates willing to pay for jobs as primary teachers.
Bhadra is currently in ED custody
The ED has already contradicted Bhadra’s statements that he was introduced to Bhattacharya in 2021 while the recovered WhatsApp chat history indicates that the conversation took place in 2018. Whereas, Bhadra is still in ED’s custody. Bhattacharya is in judicial custody along with his wife and son.
Sources said that from various documents, both paper and electronic, recovered from the residence of Bhadra and his close aides, the ED has got some data on how many candidates were recommended by them for appointments. Also, how much money he had collected from them. The investigating officers are now trying to tally the available figures to arrive at the final count in the case.
Congress leader Kuntal Ghosh’s statement is troubling the investigating officers
Another point which is puzzling the investigating officers is the statement of another accused and expelled Youth Congress leader Kuntal Ghosh. It claimed during interrogation that he had given Rs 70 lakh to Bhadra in 2014 as collection amount for Teacher Eligibility Test (TET). Out of that amount, Rs 10 lakh was given by Ghosh to former state education minister Partha Chatterjee following an instruction from Bhadra. The ED is now trying to ascertain whether the remaining Rs 60 lakh recovered from Ghosh in this case was kept by Bhadra himself or he gave it to someone else.
