Addressing the Indian community in Serbia’s capital Belgrade, President Draupadi Murmu said that India is playing the main responsibility of development on the global stage. The country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is about to reach $3.5 trillion and we are on track to become the world’s third largest economy before the end of this decade. India is working with confidence on its aspiration to become a developed country by 2047. “He said in his address after arriving here on a state visit,” We are in the era of comprehensive development, infrastructure, digital, green energy and social transformation. Murmu said that globally, India is a responsible development partner, first responder and voice of the ‘Global South’. Referring to India’s leading role on issues related to climate action, counter-terrorism, connectivity, maritime security, financial inclusion and food security, he said, “Each of these aspects reflects our efforts towards becoming a leading superpower.” .
Serbia is an ally of India’s sustainable development
The President said that India as a civilization believes in ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbkam’ which means that the whole world is one family. He said that India’s chairmanship of G-20 is based on the theme of ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’ which reflects the country’s age-old principle. The President said that both India and Serbia are ancient lands and that India’s relations with Serbia in modern times are particularly defined in the context of the Non-Aligned Movement. Murmu said that the statues of Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Rabindranath Tagore in Belgrade, Joseph Broz Tito Street in New Delhi and Tito Gol Chakkar in Jodhpur are examples of this historical connection. He said that Serbia has been a valuable partner in India’s sustainable development cooperation programme.
First visit of Indian President to Serbia
The President said that the two countries have always understood each other’s core interests and he looked forward to holding talks with the Serbian leadership during his visit on this bilateral basis. He also praised the sporting ties between the two countries and said tennis player Novak Djokovic is an inspiration to millions in India. He also said that Indian films are popular in Serbia and the European country has emerged as the new film destination for Indian filmmakers. President Murmu arrived here from Suriname on Wednesday. He was received at the airport by Serbian President Aleksandar Vukic. This is the first visit of an Indian President to Serbia. (PTI)
