Sharad Pawar On New Parliament: NCP chief Sharad Pawar has once again targeted the Modi government at the BJP-led Center regarding the new Parliament building. He has also taken a jibe at a picture of the first session of the new Parliament. Pawar encircled the Center on Tuesday (June 6) with a program called ‘Sauhard Baithak’ organized at Mahatma Gandhi Mission University in Aurangabad, Maharashtra.
During his speech, he emphasized the importance of dialogue regarding activities related to Parliament. He said that the decision on the new Parliament building could have been taken through talks with political parties.
‘Earlier also there were differences between political parties…’
According to news agency PTI, the NCP chief said that there has been a general decline in the number of people involved in interactions for parliamentary activities. Even before this there were differences between political parties but he tried to resolve them through dialogue.
‘I came to know about the new Parliament from the newspapers’
Sharad Pawar said, “I did not understand why there was a need for a new Parliament building. It could have been decided through talks (with political parties) but I came to know about the new building from the newspapers.
Significantly, the new Parliament House was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 28 May. More than 20 opposition parties had boycotted the programme. The main opposition Congress party accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of turning the inauguration of the new parliament into a coronation.
Many opposition parties kept themselves away from the program, accusing the BJP-led central government of ignoring President Draupadi Murmu. Those parties said that the new parliament should be inaugurated by President Draupadi Murmu as she is the constitutional head.
Pawar’s attack on the center
Without naming anyone, Pawar said, “Prominent people of the government do not attend the Parliament session regularly. If the head of the government comes to the Parliament someday, then that day seems different. Parliament is at the top. If it is not given importance then people’s perception (about it) also gets affected.
Referring to the picture of the first session of Parliament
Describing himself as the leader of a small political party in Parliament, Pawar said, “We had demanded to invite the President to the inauguration ceremony of the new Parliament building, which there was no need to oppose.” He reminded that In the picture taken after the first session of Parliament, there were many leaders of the country including Dr. BR Ambedkar and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.
Sharad Pawar alleged that elected leaders did not get a chance to enter the new building of Parliament. He said, “The first picture that came out of the new Parliament House was not of elected members, but of people wearing saffron clothes.”
Earlier, on the day of the inauguration of the new Parliament (on May 28), Sharad Pawar, while answering the questions of the media, said that he was glad that he did not attend the programme. He had said, “I saw the program in the morning. Glad I didn’t go there. I am worried seeing what happened over there. Are we taking the country backward? Was this event only for a limited number of people?
