Manipur Violence Update: The Central Government constituted a three-member commission to investigate the Manipur violence. Former Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court Ajay Lamba will head this commission. On behalf of the Ministry of Home Affairs, it has been said that the commission of inquiry will investigate the causes and spread of riots, violence in Manipur. The commission will have to submit its report within six months.
The Home Ministry said that the commission of inquiry into the Manipur violence case will look into whether there was lapse or negligence in the discharge of duty on the part of the responsible officers and people. Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday (June 4) appealed to the people of Manipur to remove the blockade on National Highway-2 so that basic and essential items like food, medicine and fuel could reach the state.
Violence started from May 3
Sporadic violence is still continuing in many areas of Manipur. The mutual fight between Meitei and Kuki is now affecting the entire state. So far 80 people have lost their lives. This violence started on May 3. Amit Shah had said during his visit that violence had erupted in Manipur because of a hasty decision of the High Court.
Reason for violence in Manipur?
The Maiti community came under attack after the High Court accepted the demand for grant of tribe status to the Maiti community. Apart from the decision of the High Court, the strictness of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh was also said to be the reason behind this violence. The Biren government took action against illegal encroachments in the hilly areas and clamped down on opium cultivation.
