Rajab Tayyab Erdogan is seen winning again in Turkey’s presidential election. Turkey’s election board announced on Thursday the results of the second round of presidential elections held on May 28, confirming the election of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for a third term. He has dominated Turkish politics for the past two decades. The head of the Supreme Electoral Council, Ahmet Yener, said Erdoğan received 52.18 percent of the vote, while Kemal Kelichdaroglu, the leader of the main opposition party, received 47.82 percent.
“According to these results, it is clear that Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has been elected president and the results have been sent for publication in the official gazette,” Yener said, adding that the total voter turnout stood at 85.72 percent. Erdogan (69), the longest-serving ruler in Turkey, can now hold the country’s power till 2028. According to unconfirmed reports, Erdogan may take the oath of office on Saturday, after which he may announce his new cabinet. He will face a host of domestic challenges, from a flailing economy to pressure from the return of millions of Syrian refugees.
