Tuesday has proved to be a very auspicious day for former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and his party Pakistan-Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). The court first granted interim bail to Imran Khan, who appeared in the court in the murder case. After this, another good news came out for PTI by the evening, when the court released Shah Mahmood Qureshi, a close aide of Imran and former foreign minister in his government, from jail. Following the court’s order, Qureshi was released from Rawalpindi jail on Tuesday.
Qureshi was among some of the top leaders of Imran Khan’s party arrested after the violent protests of May 9. The vice-chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party was arrested on May 9 last month on several charges, including inciting violence following the arrest of party president Imran Khan in a corruption case. Qureshi served as the Foreign Minister of Pakistan from 2018 to 2022 under the regime of Imran Khan. The Rawalpindi bench of the Lahore High Court, while hearing a petition against Qureshi’s arrest, on Tuesday ordered that the PTI leader be released immediately.
On his release from Adiala Jail, Qureshi said he would meet PTI chief Khan at his Zaman Park residence in Lahore on Wednesday and discuss the current political turmoil in the country, according to Geo TV. After his release, local media quoted him as saying, “I want to tell PTI workers that the ‘Flag of Justice’ is in my hands and I am still a part of this movement.” Addressing PTI supporters, the former minister said, “These are difficult times, but don’t lose hope as there is a morning after every night.” Dawn newspaper quoted Qureshi as saying, “I think there are countless innocent people in various jails who should be released.
Qureshi said – many innocent people have been kept in jail
Qureshi said that a large number of innocent people have also been kept in the jail. I will try, and we will pursue their cases after consultation with our legal team.” On May 18, the Islamabad High Court had ordered the release of the former foreign minister. The release was delayed due to his reluctance to give an affidavit. Violent protests erupted after Khan was arrested by paramilitary Rangers in Islamabad on May 9. His party workers protested at the Lahore Corps Commander House, Mianwali Airbase and More than 20 military installations and government buildings were vandalised, including the ISI building in Faisalabad.Khan was later released on bail.
