Bihar Politics: The Supreme Court will hear on May 8 the petition against the release of Bihar’s Bahubali leader Anand Mohan. This petition has been filed by Uma Krishnaiah, wife of late IAS G Krishnaiah. Today his lawyer placed the matter before the bench headed by the Chief Justice. The Chief Justice talked about the hearing on next Monday.
Uma Krishnaiah in her petition has demanded cancellation of the order of the Bihar government. He has said that when the death sentence is commuted to life imprisonment, then the convict should be kept in jail for life. The Supreme Court has also given such a decision. But in this case the culprit was released.
G Krishnaiah, the then District Magistrate of Gopalganj, was murdered in Khobra, Muzaffarpur in 1994. In 2007, the lower court sentenced Anand Mohan to death in this case. Later the Patna High Court converted it into life imprisonment. Anand Mohan has now been released due to the recent changes made by the state government in the jail rules of Bihar.
In the jail manual prepared by the Bihar government in 2012, 5 types of crimes were considered heinous. These included terrorism, dacoity with murder, rape with murder, more than one murder and murder of a public servant. There was a provision not to give any exemption before 20 years to those who got life imprisonment for these 5 types of crimes. But recently, by changing the jail rules, the Bihar government has put the murder of a government employee in the category of general murder. This cleared the way for Anand Mohan to come out of jail.
