A former Indian employee of Apple has been found guilty of defrauding the company of $17 million (about ₹138 crore). The US Department of Justice has sentenced him to 3 years in prison and has also asked the company to pay a fine of $19 million i.e. around Rs 155 crore.
According to a press release shared by the US Attorney’s Office, 55-year-old Dhirendra Prasad was indicted in November 2022 on charges of conspiracy to defraud Apple and related tax crimes. Dhirendra also admitted that he collaborated with two vendor companies for his activities and tax evasion.
Dhirendra has also been ordered to pay Rs 15 crore in the tax evasion case. Apart from this, it has been ordered to confiscate assets worth more than Rs 44 crore and pay an additional Rs 65 crore in cash. Dhirendra has accepted all the charges.
Worked at Apple from 2008 to 2028
According to media reports, Dhirendra worked as a buyer in Apple’s global services supply chain between 2008-2018. He was responsible for many other tasks ranging from buying phone parts from vendors.

He took payment from Apple for products that the company never received. Apart from this, Dhirendra stole parts and inflated the invoice.
