Ricky Ponting
Captain Ricky Ponting, who won the World Cup trophy twice to Australia, recently demanded that the salary in Test cricket should be increased in view of the growing craze for T20 cricket. Explain that players play league cricket around the world to earn money in T20 format. In such a situation, Ponting had said that he is also in discussion with the ICC on this issue. But the ICC has distanced itself from this discussion.
ICC differs from Ponting’s views
The ICC has distanced itself from claims by former Australia captain Ricky Ponting that talks are on at the sport’s apex body to end pay inequality in Test cricket. Ponting had said at the WTC final event earlier this month that discussions are on at the highest level in the ICC to ensure that cricketers from smaller nations are paid well for playing five days. ICC General Manager for Cricket Wasim Khan, however, said that the matter was raised in a meeting of the Cricket Committee but it was not discussed.
Wasim told media persons that I think it was probably misrepresented. The issue was initially raised in the ICC Cricket Committee. It was a matter of discussion but of course it was not taken forward. He said that Ricky’s views were a matter of discussion in the cricket committee like many other matters but there was no discussion among the members in this regard. The cricket committee is headed by former India captain Sourav Ganguly. The rapid growth of T20 cricket has led to an increasing number of cricketers preferring franchise cricket over playing for the national team, with the West Indies being at the forefront.
What did the general manager say on franchise cricket?
Asked about the growing threat from franchise cricket, Wasim said there are highly competitive domestic T20 leagues happening all over the world. It gives more choice to the fans and the players and has seen an improvement in our limited overs World Cup. Pakistan Cricket Board chief Najam Sethi has made it clear that the Indian team will not tour India for the ODI World Cup if it does not play its Asia Cup matches in Pakistan. ICC CEO Geoff Allardyce and President Greg Barclay are currently in Pakistan for regular meetings but cricketing relations between the two neighboring countries are also expected to be discussed during this time.
