The gold reserves of the Reserve Bank of India have increased by 34.22 tonnes on an annual basis to 794.64 tonnes at the end of March this year. By the end of March last year, the Reserve Bank had gold reserves of 760.42 tonnes. This includes gold deposits of 11.08 tonnes. “The Reserve Bank had 794.64 tonnes of gold reserves (including 56.32 tonnes of gold deposits) at the end of March this year,” the central bank said in a half-yearly report titled Management of Foreign Exchange Reserves: October-2022.

According to the report, out of this, 437.22 tonnes of gold is kept safe in Bank of England and Bank of International Settlements (BIS) abroad. While 301.10 tonnes of gold has been kept in the country.
In terms of value, the share of gold in total foreign exchange reserves increased to 7.81 per cent in March 2023 from 7.06 per cent in September 2022.
During the half-year, the currency reserves increased to $ 578.45 billion in March this year, from $ 532.66 billion in September 2022. Foreign exchange reserves include foreign currency assets, gold, special drawing rights and reserves held with the International Monetary Fund.
