At the age of 20-30, young women are opting for egg freeze. This is the best technique to get pregnant at an older age. Also, it is beneficial for those who want to become a mother late. This is because due to old age, many times the fertility becomes weak and the number and quality of eggs also deteriorates. However, while this trend is increasing in metro cities, people living in small towns do not know much about conceiving with this technique. Some people have such misconceptions or myths about egg freezing, due to which they avoid getting it done. Let us know about some myths and facts related to egg freezing here.

Myths 1: Is the egg freezing process painful and time consuming?

Fact- IVF specialist Dr. Shobha Gupta says that hormones, medicine, injections required to start the process of egg freezing are usually taken once or twice a day for 8 to 11 days. During this period, a doctor examines the patient with 5-7 brief visits to monitor how your body is responding to the medicine. When the patient is ready, the doctor completes the process by extracting the person’s eggs in egg retrieval surgery. The word “surgery” can sound scary. There is no need to stress about this part of the procedure, as it involves no stitches, no cuts and takes just 15 minutes. The whole process takes about two weeks from start to finish.

Myth 2: Egg freezing is only for women with affluent classes or elite careers?

Fact- Women choose to freeze their eggs for both medical and social reasons. Many women freeze their eggs due to medical diagnosis, while some do so due to financial constraints, not having a partner or for other reasons. There can be many different reasons. In the current scenario, most of the women who get their eggs frozen do so because they are yet to find their right life partner.

Myth 3: Egg freezing is not a safe procedure?

Fact- Egg freezing is a method of collecting, freezing and storing some of your eggs from your ovaries, so that you can use them to become pregnant later. Rest assured that egg freezing does not carry a high risk of complications for healthy women and is considered safe and effective.

Myth 4: Only young women and girls should freeze their eggs?

Fact- It is not necessary that every woman freezes her eggs. Also, a comprehensive medical history should be taken by a doctor before egg freezing is undertaken. Egg freezing can only help if one is expected to have fertility issues in the future or if they are in their late 30s and early 40s intending to have children.

Myth 5: Does egg freezing cause early menopause?

Fact- No, egg freezing does not cause premature menopause. Every month a woman’s body produces several eggs, which can develop. During the egg freezing process, we harvest that entire set of eggs, which in turn does not affect your future fertility. Egg freezing has no effect on menopause. This is an issue related to genetically pre-determined women.

Myth 6: Egg freezing is mainly for single people?

Fact- Egg freezing is not just for single people. Many people freeze their eggs even in long term relationships and marriages. For example, someone may decide to do so if they are struggling with endometriosis or a cancer diagnosis following treatment. Other times, when they want to be a parent late, but are ready to do so later.
