Delhi Pollution: Environment Minister Gopal Rai held a review meeting on Delhi’s air quality on Thursday (May 18) at the Delhi Secretariat. Officials of the Environment Department and Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) were present in this meeting.
During the discussion with the officials, it was found that the dusty winds blowing from the west have played a major role in increasing the AQI level and PM 10 of Delhi. On Tuesday (May 16) and Wednesday (May 17), an increase in the amount of PM10 was observed in Delhi. In view of this, instructions have been given to all agencies to run anti-smog guns continuously and sprinkle water at C&D sites.
What did Environment Minister Gopal Rai say?
Environment Minister Gopal Rai said that on May 16 and 17, many areas of Delhi city and NCR were covered in dust. The reason for the sudden increase in Delhi’s AQI level is the wind blowing from the west, along with which the dust of Thar and Pakistan is also coming.
Gopal Rai said that this is the reason why the contribution of dust pollution in Delhi from May 1 to 15 was only 11 percent. It increased to 65.77 percent on 16 and 17 May. He told that as a result PM10 in Delhi went up to dangerous levels in these two days.
What is the rule in summer action plan?
Gopal Rai told that under the Summer Action Plan, 84 Mechanical Road Sweeping (MRS) machines, 609 water sprinklers and 185 mobile anti-smog guns have been deployed by different departments across Delhi to prevent dust pollution.
Regarding dust pollution, earlier there was a rule to install anti-smog guns only on construction sites above 20,000 square meters. He told that now on the basis of the new rule, it has been made mandatory to install anti-smog guns on the construction site of area ranging from 5 thousand square meters to more than that.
For this, instructions have been issued to all the concerned departments to continuously monitor the construction sites. According to the instructions of the NGT, the department will take appropriate action if rules are violated at construction sites.
