In January last year, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested Deepti Marla alias Maryam for her alleged links with the notorious terrorist organization Islamic State (ISIS). Hailing from Kodagu, Karnataka, Deepti is married to Anas Abdul Rahman, son of BM Basha. His father Idinabba was once a Congress MLA. Idinaba died in 2009.
NIA officials had investigated on the basis of suspicion about the young woman who became Maryam from Dipti. During investigation, it was revealed that Maryam was involved in a racket of recruiting youths into the Islamic State (ISIS) network. To arrest him, the security agency collected evidence against him for five months.
It is noteworthy that the NIA raided his house in August 2021 and arrested Anas Abdul Rehman’s cousin Ammar for ISIS links. The NIA had interrogated Maryam at that time. However, he was not taken into custody at that time. He was arrested in January 2022 after getting evidence.
Dipti Marla, a dentist by profession, was a Hindu before marrying Anas. She was ‘attracted’ to Islam while she was studying in the UAE. She later fell in love with Anas while pursuing her BDS at a college in Derlakate, Mangalore. She converted to Islam and named herself Maryam. After this she married Anas.
Mary used to trap Hindus in honeytrap
During interrogation, Deepti Marla alias Maryam told NIA that she used to trap Hindus through honeytrap and convert them to Islam. After this she used to try to recruit them in ISIS. He confessed to converting more than 10 Hindu youths to Islam across Karnataka.
Maryam had created more than 15 IDs with Hindu and Muslim names on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Telegram. She used to handle the Chronicle Foundation, an Instagram page for ISIS, at the behest of her husband.
Maryam used to trap the youth through obscene chats. After increasing acquaintance, Maryam made video calls to Hindu youths. Her sexually provocative talk enticed the youths and made them fall in love. Then she used to promise to marry him.
Once the Hindu youths were completely trapped in her trap, she used to force them to convert to Islam and then join ISIS. If her potential target was a Muslim youth, she would feign love and encourage them to join ISIS.
The NIA said that four to five youths from Kerala went to Syria in 2020 and 2021 after being seduced by Maryam. Madesh Perumal alias Abdul, who was arrested in Bengaluru five months prior to his arrest, also fell under the trap of Maryam. He converted to Islam and converted to Islam.
Madesh Perumal had allegedly promised operatives of the terrorist organization to carry out bomb blasts in the country. The agency said that Maryam had spent Rs 10 lakh to woo Madesh Perumal. Apart from having links with ISIS, Deepti Marla alias Maryam also had links with terrorist organizations in Jammu and Kashmir.
According to a report in the Indian Express, the NIA said, “During investigation it has come to light that Deepti Marla and Mohd Amin had left for Kashmir under Hijra (religious migration) in January and March 2020 after the end of ISIS caliphate in Syria/Iraq. had visited. He went there to engage in terrorist activities in Kashmir and support the activities of ISIS.
During the investigation, it has also come to light that along with Mohammad Amin, Deepti Marla was also the mastermind of the ISIS conspiracy. Those arrested by the NIA in connection with the case registered in March 2021 also included Mohd Amin alias Abu Yahya and his two associates – Dr Raheesh Rasheed and Mushab Anwar.
