In Katni, Madhya Pradesh, a case of forced Christian prayer has come to the notice of children in a children’s home run by a missionary organization. After which a case has been registered against the institution under the Juvenile Justice Act and the Madhya Pradesh Religious Freedom Act. Priyank Kanungo, chairperson of ‘National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR)’, has lodged an FIR against the Christian organization at Madhavnagar police station. The role of District Child Protection Unit and Child Welfare Committee is also questionable in this regard.
Priyank Kanungo briefed the journalists about the matter. He told that NCPCR had received complaints about the children’s home being run in Jhinjri of Katni. After which the commission made a surprise inspection of the institute run by the Christian missionary. During this, the children told them that Hindu Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (SC-ST) children were forcibly made to offer Christian prayer. Even on the day of Diwali, children were forced to recite Christian prayers.

In the surprise check, cases like forging documents of children, tampering with the age of children came to the fore. In addition, the children reported that children who do not participate in Christian prayer are abused. They do not get treatment when they fall ill and are not even allowed to participate in sports. Priyank said that the Special Juvenile Police has recorded the statements of the children and a case has also been registered in this regard.

The role of the officer of the District Child Protection Unit in the case is said to be suspicious. Lawmakers said the officer leaked information about a confidential investigation. The children had also complained against that officer. Also the activities of the local child welfare committee are suspicious which will be probed.
4 children and 1 adult have recorded their statement against the institution. It is being said that the missionary is also getting funding from abroad. In the reports, it is being described as a case of motivating for conversion. Police say that the matter is being investigated on the basis of the information given by the children.
