New York. Virginia has become the 17th US state after Utah and Mississippi to include Sikhism in school curriculum. The Virginia State Board of Education voted Thursday to include Sikhism in the curriculum. The move will provide an opportunity for more than one million students in Virginia to learn about the Sikh community.
Harman Singh, senior education manager for the Sikh Coalition, said after working with local Sangat for more than two years, this change will help ensure that Sikhi can be taught in classrooms across the Commonwealth of Virginia.
“We will continue to fight not only for the Sikh community, but for all groups whose history deserves to be taught,” the US-based Sikh Coalition said in a statement.
Sikhism is the fifth largest religion in the world and the Sikh community has contributed to American society for more than 125 years in the fields of civil rights, politics, agriculture, engineering and medicine, the coalition said.(IANS)
