Image Source : BCCI The picture of BCCI after which Sourav Ganguly was accused of interfering in the selection
The tenure of Sourav Ganguly, the former President of the Cricket Board of India (BCCI), was full of controversies. Especially the year of 2021 when the transition phase was going on in Team India. The era of Virat Kohli’s captaincy was coming to an end and head coach Ravi Shastri’s power was also coming to an end. This was the time when Virat Kohli gave up the captaincy of the T20 team. He was dropped from the captaincy of the ODI team. After that Virat and Ganguly controversy came to the fore which was also in discussion in the current IPL 2023. During that time, questions were also raised in the media that Sourav Ganguly himself was present in the selection meeting. A picture of this also went viral. But the then board chairman rejected it.
Now once again this issue can come up for discussion. Team India’s former head coach Ravi Shastri has given such a statement that once again the news of a big scam in the selection meeting of the team to be held during that time has come to the fore. This is a scam of those people who were present during these meetings whose presence should not have been there according to the rules. Although Shastri did not name anyone, but he hinted that some people were present during the meeting who should not have been there. He also denied that he had any interference in the selection process.
Ravi Shastri’s statement created panic
When asked about this, Ravi Shastri told ESPN Cricinfo that, I had absolutely zero experience about this. I stayed with the team for seven years but never wandered around the selection meeting. I was neither invited nor was I allowed to go as per rules. As a coach, you are with the players most of the time. You may not participate in this meeting but at least you can know the views of the selectors. After that whatever is appropriate for the team should be done. But I have absolutely no idea when it starts and when it ends. According to what I came to know, those people who should not have been present in the selection meeting for 3-4 years. It was against the rules.

What does the BCCI constitution say?
After this statement of Ravi Shastri, once again that old issue has come up for discussion, according to which Sourav Ganguly used to be present in the meeting of the selection committee. This issue was also in discussion last year during the selection controversy of Wriddiman Saha. Some selectors also confirmed that Ganguly used to interfere in the selection meeting. In the photo that went viral, Sourav Ganguly was seen sitting with former chief selector MSK Prasad, then captain Virat Kohli and vice-captain Rohit Sharma. Ganguly had clearly told the media that this photo is not of the selection meeting. If we talk about the constitution of BCCI, then the president should not have any interference in the selection of the national team. The Supreme Court has also approved this constitution. According to this, only the Board Secretary has the right to be present in the meeting and that too only as a convenor without any interference in the selection process.
