According to media reports, the hearing in the Palghar murder case took place on Friday (28 April 2023). During this hearing, Supreme Court Chief Justice DY Chandrachud said that if the state government wants, the matter can be investigated by the CBI.
On this, the Maharashtra government told the apex court that it has decided to get the Palghar violence probed by the CBI. After this, the Supreme Court said that if the state government has taken the decision, then there is no need for any direction from the court on this.
Let us inform that earlier in the hearing held on October 11, 2022, the Maharashtra government had filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court saying that it is ready to get the Palghar violence case investigated by the CBI. The government has no objection to this.
Uddhav government had opposed the CBI investigation…
Earlier, the then Mahavikas Aghadi government led by Uddhav Thackeray had opposed the CBI inquiry in the Supreme Court. It was argued on behalf of the Uddhav Thackeray government that the Maharashtra Police has filed a charge sheet in this matter. Along with this, action has also been taken against the policemen who were negligent in its investigation.
What is the matter…
On 16 April 2020, two sadhus named Kalpavriksha Giri and Sushil Giri and their driver were lynched by a mob in Palghar. Both the sadhus were traveling from Mumbai to Surat when the incident took place. During this, a mob of more than 200 people stopped him and overturned his car after pelting stones. The mob thrashed the sadhus so much that they died.
Following the incident, in June 2020, sadhus of the Panch Dashaban Juna Akhara and relatives of the two deceased sadhus accused the state authorities probing the case of bias. After this, he demanded an NIA/CBI inquiry from the Supreme Court.
