The Fact India: A hearing was held in the Supreme Court on Friday on the petition of advocate Vishal Tiwari regarding the murder of Atiq Ahmed and Ashraf in police custody. The Supreme Court has sought a detailed report from the UP government in this matter. The court has asked the government what happened on that day (the day Atiq-Ashraf was killed) and what progress has been made so far in the investigation. Apart from this, the court has also sought the report of the encounter of the accused in the Umesh Pal murder case that took place on February 24.
The court also questioned the UP government as to how the murderers came to know that Atiq-Ashraf were being taken to the hospital. Why was the vehicle carrying Ateeq-Ashraf not taken directly to the hospital? The next hearing in this matter will be held after three weeks. Advocate Vishal Tiwari demanded setting up of an independent committee under the chairmanship of a retired Supreme Court judge for a high-level probe into the Atiq-Ashraf murder case.
In the petition, a demand was also made to investigate the total 183 encounters in the Yogi government so far. However, the UP government filed a caveat in the Supreme Court on Thursday after the petition was filed. The government said that no decision should be given on this issue without hearing the government’s side. Former IPS officer Amitabh Thakur has also filed a letter petition in the Supreme Court. Thakur has said in the letter petition that Ateeq Ahmed and his brother are criminals, but the manner in which they were killed shows the possibility of the state government’s role in the incident. CBI should investigate this.
After this sensational murder in police custody, the UP government had formed a judicial commission apart from the SIT. The crime scene was recreated on April 19 in the presence of members of the Judicial Inquiry Commission and the SIT. The commission’s team had earlier inspected the spot. The commission had also taken information from the police officers. The commission had also questioned constable Mansingh, who was injured in the shootout, and Dhumanganj police station in-charge Rajesh Maurya about the incident. Retired Justice Arvind Kumar Tripathi of the Allahabad High Court is the chairman of the second commission.
