If more food containing vitamin A is consumed in youth, then the risk of bone fracture increases greatly in old age. An adult person should not consume more than 1.5 mg or 1500 micrograms of vitamin A in a day.
High Risk of Bone Fractures in Old Age: The basis of our whole body rests on bones only. If the bones are weak then it will be difficult for us to do any work properly. Bone growth usually stops after the age of 20. After this, there is no leakage of nutrients from the bones, hence nutritious diet is needed. Calcium, Vitamin D are two such important components which are very important for the strength of bones. But if our diet starts deteriorating, then in old age, nutrients start leaking from the bones and due to this the bones start becoming weak. This results in bone fractures or osteoporosis. The risk of bone fractures is higher in men over 60 years of age and women after menopause.
The website of the British Ministry of Health has quoted a research as saying that if more food containing vitamin A is consumed in youth, then the risk of bone fracture in old age increases greatly. This is the reason why some people get osteoporosis after old age. At the same time, the risk of bone fracture increases the most in women after menopause. That’s why limited intake of Vitamin A has been advised during youth.
These three foods increase the risk of bone fracture
1. Animal Liver-According to NHS, maximum vitamin A is found in animal liver. Vitamin A is found in it twice as much as we need. That’s why it has been said not to consume liver more than once a week. This will increase the risk of bone fracture manifold in old age.
2. Fish Liver Oil- Some fishes are very oily. The liver of big fish is also big. The oil that comes out from the liver of fishes, contains a lot of vitamin A in it. That’s why don’t eat too much liver of such fishes. Nowadays some people also consume fish liver oil as a supplement. According to the NHS this should not be done at all. Fish liver oil will increase the risk of osteoporosis later on.
