Hundreds of Americans escorted by military drones arrived at a port in the East African country on Saturday as part of a US-led campaign to evacuate civilians amid continuing violence in Sudan. US officials said the road evacuation operation was monitored by the military using an American unmanned aerial vehicle and 200 to 300 Americans were taken in a bus convoy to the relatively safe port of Port Sudan.
America had called the evacuation operation dangerous
The US initially refused to launch any operation to evacuate Americans trapped in Sudan, calling it too dangerous, leading American families living there to denounce their country’s administration. US special operations forces in Sudan evacuated its embassy and other US government employees by air from the violence-torn country on April 22, but there was no evacuation of the thousands of US citizens living there, many of whom have dual citizenship, while dozens of other countries are conducting evacuation operations to get their nationals out of Sudan by air, land or water.
No US workers at ‘Port Sudan’
US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said that the convoy brought US citizens, US-appointed local people and citizens of allied countries to the port. “We again caution US citizens not to travel to Sudan,” he said. Officials said the US citizens would arrive at the dock in Jeddah where US consular officials would be waiting for them, but at ‘Port Sudan’ ‘ has no American employees.
