In the African country Sudan, violence has been going on for the last 15 days between the army and the paramilitary forces over the seizure of power. It is directly affecting the people living there. Looking at the situation, India is evacuating its citizens from there. A group of 229 Indian passengers reached Bengaluru on Sunday (April 30, 2023) as part of Operation Kaveri.
135 Indian citizens were brought home on Saturday (April 29, 2023) from Sudan, which was burning in the fire of violence due to the mutual rivalry of two army generals. This was the 10th batch of Operation Kaveri. A C 130J aircraft of the Indian Air Force successfully departed from Port Sudan carrying this batch.
Sudan is carrying out its operation in Sudan with the help of countries like United Arab Emirates (UAE), United Kingdom (UK), America and India, Saudi Arabia. Explain that the Indian Air Force (IAF) carried out a daring operation on the intervening night of 27 and 28 April to evacuate Indians from Sudan. 121 Indian people were rescued by landing the plane on a small dilapidated airstrip at Wadi Sayyedna, about 40 km north of Khartoum in Sudan.
An Indian Air Force convoy led by the Indian Defense Attaché (IDA) arrived at the airstrip. The airstrip was rough. There was neither a navigational approach aid nor fuel and landing lights. These landing lights are essential for guiding the landing of an aircraft at night.
The Indian Air Force used a C-130J in this operation and Group Captain Ravi Nanda was its captain. The crew of the C-130J aircraft used electro-optical/infrared sensors to check for any obstructions on the runway. Used Night Vision Goggles (NVG) to deal with the darkness.
The aircrew then adopted a tactical approach, using Night Vision Goggles (NVG) for the dark and landed the aircraft. During this the engine of the aircraft continued to run. At the same time, 8 Garuda commandos of the Indian Air Force kept the passengers and their luggage in the aircraft and took off with the help of this technique.
At present, India is running Operation Kaveri to evacuate Indians from Sudan. Under this operation, more than 1700 people from Sudan have been brought safely to India so far. 17 of the people brought from there have been quarantined. The violence in Sudan has so far killed more than 500 people and injured nearly 5,000. The United Nations reported that more than 75,000 people have been displaced by the fighting.
