A few days ago, the Maharashtra government removed the name of a public park named after 18th century ruler Tipu Sultan from him. Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA Raees Sheikh is now opposing the decision.

On Friday, January 27, Mangal Prabhat Lodha, the Guardian Minister of Mumbai Suburbs, announced the decision to remove Tipu Sultan’s name from Malad’s garden.

Opposing the move, Shaikh told India Today that it is not the job of a guardian minister to rename parks under the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). He further said that BMC has the right to change the name and the local corporators should decide on the names.

The Samajwadi Party MLA hit out at the foster minister, saying ministers with statutory powers should work under the law. Just because they want to target a leader because it does not fit their political narrative, they cannot take such illegal decisions, he added.
