Mainpuri bypoll: What Akhilesh is doing to woo Dalit voters in the absence of BSP

The by-election for the Mainpuri Lok Sabha seat, which fell vacant after the death of Mulayam Singh Yadav, is to be held on December 5. Mulayam’s daughter-in-law and Akhilesh Yadav’s wife Dimple Yadav is in the fray on this seat, which is considered to be a bastion of SP, in front of whom Raghuraj Shakya from BJP is fighting. Due to the absence of BSP in the Mainpuri seat, the contest has become interesting and Dalit voters have come to play a decisive role. In such a situation, Akhilesh Yadav has made every possible effort to help the Dalit community to preserve the SP’s stronghold and his father’s political legacy.

Due to non-fielding of BSP candidates in Mainpuri Lok Sabha seat, both BJP and SP are keeping an eye on Dalit voters. In such a situation, Akhilesh Yadav has inaugurated the SP office in Karhal assembly constituency by the hands of a Dalit woman. Coming from Scheduled Caste (SC) community, Rajkumari Rawal cut the ribbon of SP’s election office. Political experts believe that Akhilesh has tried to woo Dalit and women voters by playing this bet.

Rajkumari Rawal, who inaugurated the office of Dimple Yadav, has contested twice as an independent candidate in front of the SP candidate for the post of chairman in the body elections of Karhal Nagar Panchayat. However, Rajkumari Rawal could not win, but her daughter is currently a councilor. Rajkumari Rawal is very active in this kind of Karhal area.

It is believed that Akhilesh Yadav has tried to kill many birds with one stone by inaugurating the election office at the hands of Dalit women. Due to the absence of BSP in the by-election, there is only one question in everyone’s mind that with whom Mayawati’s vote bank will go. In such a situation, Akhilesh has made a bet to help the Dalit community, and has also tried to keep other women voters connected.

Tell me that there are 2 lakh Dalit voters in Mainpuri seat, in which 120 thousand are Jatav and 60 thousand Kataria community and 20 thousand are other Dalits. Yadav is the maximum, who are considered to be the traditional voters of SP. Due to the landing of the BJP candidate from the Shakya community, the Shakya community may be inclined towards him. Because of this, the role of Dalit votes has become decisive in Mainpuri.

BSP vote decisive in Mainpuri

SP and BSP fought the 2019 Lok Sabha elections together. In Mainpuri, Mulayam Singh got 5,24,926 votes and BJP’s Prem Singh Shakya got 4,30,537 votes. BSP has never been able to win the election on Mainpuri seat, but has been continuously contesting the rest of the elections except in 2019. In the elections of 2004 and 2009, the BSP has got close to 30 per cent votes, whereas in the rest of the elections it has been getting 12 to 17 per cent votes. In this way BSP has sometimes been at number two and sometimes at number three in Mainpuri.

The average vote share of BSP in Mainpuri Lok Sabha seat is close to 16 per cent and in the 2019 elections, the difference between SP and BJP was just 11 per cent votes. In such a situation, Mayawati’s Dalit voters are in a decisive role in the by-elections. Dalit voters in Mainpuri are close to two lakh. To whom this vote will go, the path will be easy for him. That’s why Akhilesh Yadav got Dalit woman Rajkumari Rawal to inaugurate the election office, while a Dalit was also made proposer in Dimple Yadav’s nomination.

Alok Shakya, Rajnarayan Batham, AH Hashmi and Tej Pratap Singh Yadav were the proposers in the nomination of SP candidate Dimple Yadav for Mainpuri seat. Akhilesh Yadav also took care of family to caste equation through Dimple’s proponents. The proposer has tried to create a Shakya-Dalit-Muslim-Yadav equation. That’s why one proponent each from all the four castes has been kept. Apart from this, veteran Dalit leaders of SP have been engaged in election campaign. Swami Prasad Maurya, who was once close to Mayawati, is now in SP and Akhilesh has given him the responsibility of helping Dalit and Shakya voters in Mainpuri.

Caste vote on Mainpuri seat

Mainpuri seat has the maximum number of Shakya voters after Yadav voters. The number of Yadav voters in this stronghold of SP is around 4.5 lakh while the number of Shakya voters in this seat is around 3.25 lakh. There are two lakh Thakurs and one lakh Brahmin voters. There, Dalits are two lakh, out of which 1.20 lakh are Jatav, 1 lakh Lodhi, 70 thousand Vaishya and one lakh Muslim. SP has been winning this seat continuously since 1996 with the help of Yadav-Muslim equation. This is the reason why this seat is considered to be the most secure for Dimple, but BJP has made a big bet by fielding Raghuraj Shakya. In such a situation, Akhilesh Yadav has worked day and night to make Dimple Yadav win.
