Karachi: Most of the teams have announced their squads for the T20 World Cup. Many veteran players have raised questions on Pakistan’s team selection. However, chief selector Mohammad Wasim said – Pakistan team has no plans to change the T20 World Cup squad, but some changes can be made if needed. Actually, Pakistan has lost the first T20 match against England at home. It was a middle order flop.
Talking to Geo News, Wasim admitted that the Pakistan team is facing problems in the middle order and they are trying different combinations during the England series ahead of the mega tournament. In the 15-man squad announced last week, top-order batsman Shan Masood has been included in the shortest format along with pacers Mohammad Wasim Jr and Shaheen Shah Afridi for the first time. While Fakhar Zaman, Mohammad Haris and Shahnawaz Dahani have been included in the reserve.
Changes in the team can be done till October 9
Wasim Jr. has been included after fully recovering from a side strain suffered during the ACC T20 Asia Cup. While Shaheen is undergoing rehabilitation for a knee injury in London. He is expected to resume bowling early next month. It is being said that he will join the team in Brisbane on 15 October. Team changes can be made until 9 October without the approval of the Event Technical Committee.
The team’s performance against England is not satisfactory
Mohammad Wasim said that the team’s performance in the final of the Asia Cup 2022 and the first T20 against England was not satisfactory. He said, ‘Pakistan team is facing batting problem, for which efforts are being made to solve it. The team management has also been making different combinations in the recent series to sort it out and give a chance to the bench strength. The World Cup is near and we are not worried about two consecutive defeats.
Sam Ayub and Sharjeel Khan in plan
Regarding the change in the World Cup squad, the chief selector said that there is no plan to change it right now, but there is an option. He said- I do not know what changes can be made. I am hopeful that the players selected for the tournament will do well in the current series. Injuries can also cause changes.
He said – adding Fakhar Zaman is part of the team and we hope that he will recover from the injury soon. But if he is not fit for the World Cup, then some names are being considered. He said that Sam Ayub and Sharjeel Khan are in our 18 players but not in 15. He said, ‘It is not necessary to choose an opener instead of an opener. Some names are being reviewed.” Wasim said he would not mind his selection or criticism against himself, but regretted targeting the players.
