whatever the weight of the jewelery
A flat fee will be levied on the cost of one piece of jewelery or hallmarking of the item, irrespective of the weight of the gold jewellery. For your information, let us tell you that the Bureau of Indian Standards under the Department of Consumer Affairs has changed the hallmarking charges for gold and silver items for the first time after the introduction of hallmarking regulations in 2018. This revision has been done almost after 4 years of the introduction of hallmarking fee.
Sakhya rule came into force from 1st June
Gold jewelery buyers should note that hallmarking of gold jewelery and artefacts has been made mandatory with effect from June 1, 2022, irrespective of its purity. So, if you are buying gold jewelery now, the jeweler cannot sell you the jewelery unless it is hallmarked.
Hallmarking of silver jewelery not mandatory
However, hallmarking of silver jewelery and artefacts is not mandatory. If a customer wishes to buy hallmarked silver jewellery, he can request the same from the jeweler at the time of purchase. At present, BIS has allowed hallmarking of gold only in these six categories (14 karat, 18 karat, 20 karat, 22 karat, 23 karat and 24 karat). Thus, if an item of gold jewelery is stamped 18K750, it means that the item is 75% gold.
hallmarked gold sign
The government has also changed the hallmarking symbol for gold jewellery. Effective July 1, 2021, hallmarked gold will have three signs. These include the BIS mark, purity and fitness grade and a 6 digit alphanumeric code. The 6-digit alphanumeric code is also called a Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) number. This number is unique to every gold jewellery. Customers can verify this HUID number on the BIS Care app.
Know the purity of gold from gold hallmark
The rule of gold hallmarking has been implemented for gold jewelery in the country. Only 22 carat gold is used to make jewelery and this gold is 91.6 percent pure. But after adulteration, only 89 or 90 percent pure gold is sold as 22 carat gold and then sold to jewelry. That’s why whenever you buy jewelry, definitely take information about its hallmark. If the hallmark of gold is 375, then this gold is 37.5% pure gold. On the other hand, if the hallmark is 585, then this gold is 58.5 percent pure. This gold is 75.0 percent true when it is hallmarked 750. When 916 is hallmarked, gold is 91.6 per cent true. When 990 is hallmarked, gold is 99.0 percent genuine. If the hallmark is 999, then the gold is 99.9 percent genuine.
