New Delhi: Jagdeep Dhankhar will be the new Vice President of the country. He got a total of 528 votes. A total of 725 MPs voted in the Vice Presidential election. Jagdeep Dhankhar of West Bengal was standing on behalf of NDA in the election. At the same time, the opposition has expressed confidence in Margaret Alva. NDA’s Vice Presidential candidate Jagdeep Dhankhar has reached Parliamentary Affairs Minister Prahlad Joshi’s residence at 11 Akbar Road.
In the morning, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, Union Ministers Nitin Gadkari and Dharmendra Pradhan among others cast their votes for the Vice Presidential election. Explain that all MPs of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, including nominated members, vote in the Vice Presidential election. The next Vice President of the country will take the oath of office on August 11. The term of current Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu ends on August 10.
Know about the candidates
NDA candidate Dhankhar, a lawyer by profession, joined politics in 1989. He became the Governor of West Bengal in July 2019 and since then has been making headlines for his turbulent relationship with the Mamata Banerjee government. He tendered his resignation as the Governor of West Bengal. Earlier, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati announced her party’s support for Dhankhar. At the same time, Alva filed her nomination for the Vice Presidential election on 19 July. The opposition parties on July 17 decided to field the former Rajasthan governor as their joint candidate for the Vice Presidential election. The decision to field Alva was taken at a meeting of opposition leaders of 17 parties at NCP supremo Sharad Pawar’s residence.
