New Delhi: Cricket is a gentleman’s game, but when the excitement is at its peak, sometimes players lose their senses. A similar scene emerged between the third Test played between England and New Zealand. The incident happened during the 89th over of New Zealand’s second innings, when England pacer Stuart Broad fielded the ball in his followthrough and threw it towards Daryl Mitchell, with the New Zealand batsman not leaving his crease. The ball was thrown carelessly, which could have resulted in injury.
ICC got reprimanded
Stuart Broad has received an official reprimand from the ICC in this matter. One demerit point has been added to his record for a code of conduct violation during the Headingley Test. Broad was charged with a breach of Article 2.9, which relates to throwing a ball at a player in an unreasonable or dangerous manner. Broad admitted a Level One offense and accepted the ban proposed by the ICC match referee David Boon at Headingley.
second offense
This would count as Broad’s second offense within a period of 24 months. He has previously been fined demerit points for using inappropriate words for Yasir Shah during the 2020 Old Trafford Test against Pakistan.
Accruing four or more demerit points within 24 months can result in a ban for one Test or two limited overs matches. Broad did not get a single wicket in New Zealand’s second innings. Now he is just one wicket away from taking 650 wickets in Test cricket. While he may soon break Glenn McGrath’s record as well. Glenn McGrath holds the record of 563 wickets in 243 innings of 124 matches.
