New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit on Saturday said he had seen Prime Minister Narendra Modi in pain due to allegations related to the 2002 Gujarat riots. He said, “A big leader who had endured all the pain like ‘Vishpan’ of Lord Shankar for 18 to 19 years without saying a word and I saw him suffer very closely. Only a strong-willed person could stand up. ”
Some people had tarnished the image of BJP in this case, but now it has been removed. He also took a dig at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi as he is being questioned by the ED in the National Herald case.
He said, “Modi did not do drama by appearing before the SIT. Come out in support of me, call MLAs-MPs and hold a dharna. If the SIT wants to question the CM, he himself is ready to cooperate. Protest. Why?”
He said, “Gujarat government did not delay its action at the time of riots. But so many Sikhs were killed in Delhi but no arrests were made? How are they accusing us of being biased?”
The Supreme Court of India on Friday upheld the clean chit of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to 64 people, including PM Narendra Modi, in the 2002 Gujarat riots case. It rejected the plea of Zakia Jafri, wife of Congress leader Ehsan Jafri, saying that the petition has no merit.
Ehsan Jafri was killed on February 28, 2002 during the violence at Gulberg Society in Ahmedabad.
The three-judge bench observed that the appeal was devoid of merit and upheld the decision of the Metropolitan Magistrate and later the High Court to accept the clean chit of the Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team or SIT to PM Modi and others.
The top court praised the SIT and pulled up the appellant for “undermining the integrity of the investigators”. The court has also spoken of “some disgruntled officials of Gujarat and others who are trying to create sensation by making false disclosures”. There is a need to stand in the dock and face the law”.
Kapil Sibal, appearing for Zakia Jafri, told the top court that the SIT did not investigate but cooperated and its investigation was full of lapses to save the conspirators. He also said that the officers of the SIT as well as the police officers were “rewarded”.
However, the Supreme Court said that Jafri’s petition was inspired by the directions of “some other”.
