Buddha Purnima 2022: Today is the full moon day of Vaishakh month. According to the belief, Lord Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, was born on the day of Vaishakh Purnima, hence Vaishakh Purnima is also known as Buddha Purnima. Lord Buddha was born on this day 2564 years ago. The first lunar eclipse of this year is also going to take place on the day of Vaishakh Purnima.
Buddha Purnima is the biggest festival for the followers of Buddhism. It is considered an important festival for the people of Hindu religion. According to Hindu religious texts, Lord Vishnu is considered to be the ninth incarnation. It is told in mythological scriptures that Lord Buddha, the ninth incarnation of Lord Shri Vishnu, was born on the day of Vaishakh Purnima, hence this day is known as Buddha Purnima or Buddha Jayanti. Buddha Purnima date is considered very auspicious. The auspicious time of Buddha Purnima will start from 12:45 on 15th May till 9:45 on 16th May.
Lord Buddha was born, attained enlightenment and Mahaparinirvana, all three took place on the same day i.e. Vaishakh Purnima. It is said that when he attained enlightenment on this day, he was called Gautam Buddha from Siddhartha. That is why this day is considered very important in Buddhism.
According to mythological belief, Siddhartha Gautama (Gautam Buddha) was born in 563 BC at a place named Lumbini in Nepal. His parents’ name was King Shuddhodan and Mayadevi. He grew up in a royal family in Kapilvastu. Although he gave up materialistic pleasures and extravagance at an early age.
It is said that being detached from worldly life, he meditated continuously for 49 days under a banyan tree (Bodhi tree) in Gaya. Due to the attainment of knowledge on the 49th day, he was called a Bodhisattva. The Eightfold Path of Lord Buddha given to the world is the path to the solution of all sorrows.
After attaining enlightenment, he gave his first sermon in Sarnath’s Mrigadav. His first five disciples were Kaundach, Vaspa, Bhaddodi, Mahanaga and Arsaji. It is also known as turning of the wheel of Dharma. Lord Buddha inspired people to follow the path of truth and non-violence.
That is why the birth anniversary of Lord Buddha is celebrated with great pomp not only in India but all over the world. Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Cambodia, Java, Indonesia, Tibet, Mongolia celebrate the special day of Buddha Jayanti as a ‘Vesak’ of celebration.

On this day lamps are lit. Decorated with colorful flags and vows to live on the teachings of the Buddha.
On this day devotees offer flowers to Lord Buddha, light incense sticks and candles and pray for peace by touching the feet of Lord Buddha.
