New Delhi: Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, who turned 71 on Tuesday (May 3, 2022), did not attend his birthday celebrations due to communal tension and stone-pelting in Jodhpur. Five policemen were injured in the incident that happened at midnight, a few hours before Eid.
Heavy police deployment was said to bring the situation under control, but tension flared up again after Eid prayers on Tuesday morning when some people pelted stones near Jalori Gate in Jodhpur. PTI news agency reported that some vehicles were damaged.
In the wake of clashes in Jodhpur, Gehlot has now called a high-level security meeting with the Rajasthan DGP and other officials over the law and order situation in the state.
Earlier in the day, Gehlot had termed the incident as unfortunate and appealed to the people to maintain peace.
He had said in a tweet, ‘Respect the tradition of love and brotherhood of Jodhpur, Marwar, I appeal to all parties to cooperate in maintaining peace and restoring law and order.’
Gehlot said that he has instructed the administration to maintain peace and order. Jodhpur, in particular, is Gehlot’s hometown. Meanwhile, internet services have been suspended in Jodhpur.
According to reports, members of the minority community were holding Eid flags and they put up the flag at an intersection with the statue of freedom fighter Balmukund Bissa. This led to a tussle as another community alleged that they had planted a saffron flag there before Parashuram Jayanti, which had disappeared. The matter turned into stone-pelting and clashes, following which the police reached the spot to control the situation.
