Farmers across the country (Farmers) are currently engaged in the harvesting of wheat. Rabi season is in its last phase and after few weeks farmers will start preparing for Kharif season. But the huge increase in the cost of agriculture has become a matter of concern for the farmers. In the last one year, there has been a huge increase in prices ranging from diesel to fertilizers and seeds. In view of the rising inflation, farmers say that this time the labor charge can also be doubled. At the same time, the earnings from the high price of wheat are also expected to be affected by inflation in the Kharif season.
Farmers of Punjab, a major state in terms of agriculture, say that if there had been an increase in one or two agricultural related products, there would not have been much effect, but the prices of all things have increased. The effect of increase in diesel prices is being seen in all sectors. Farmers say that there is talk of good price of wheat everywhere. But it should not be forgotten that the increase in temperature has affected the production and there has been a reduction of 10 to 20 percent in the yield.
Kirti Kisan Union vice-president Rajinder Singh Deepsinhwala told The Tribune that farmers are already in trouble. Their earnings have already come down due to inflation and there has been a huge increase in the cost for the upcoming crop. Due to this situation, farmers will be forced to take more loans.
impact on rural economy
Kulwant Singh, a farmer living in Mansa told that the price of paddy seed has increased by up to Rs 20. The cost of pesticides has also increased significantly. In view of the increased cost, farmers are worried about the cultivation of paddy. He said that inflation has increased so much, but we do not think that the government will increase the MSP of paddy by even Rs 100.
Ram Singh, a farmer from Patiala, told that the challenges of Kharif season are not only there. The problem of fodder has come with farmers like us who are cattle rearers. The rate of dry fodder i.e. straw has increased by two to three times. In this season, farmers used to get straw in the range of Rs 250 to 300 per quintal, but this time the price has reached Rs 900.
Agricultural laborers are needed for planting paddy. Farmers say that this time the labor fee is expected to increase significantly. Last year workers used to charge 3000 to 3500 rupees per acre for transplanting, but this time it can reach 5000. Experts say that the increase in inflation and increase in agricultural expenditure will also have an impact on the rural economy.
