New Delhi: Twitter has announced a ban on ‘misleading’ ads related to climate change on its platform. The micro-blogging platform said misleading ads on Twitter “that contradict the scientific consensus on climate change are prohibited in line with our Inappropriate Content Policy”.
“We believe climate denialism should not be monetized on Twitter and that misrepresentation of ads should not detract from important conversations about the climate crisis,” the company said in a blog post late Friday.
Last year, Twitter introduced a dedicated topic to help people find personal conversations about climate change.
Twitter said misleading information about climate change could undermine efforts to protect the planet.
“In the coming months, we will have more to share on our work to add credible, authoritative context to the climate conversations taking place on Twitter,” the company said.
Twitter aims to achieve 100 percent carbon-neutral power sourcing in its existing data centers by the end of this year.
Since 2021, conversations about sustainability have increased by more than 150 percent on Twitter.
“We’ve seen a 60 percent increase in terms like ‘restore’ and ‘rebalancing’. The discussion about waste reduction has increased by over 100 percent and decarbonization by over 50 percent,” Twitter said.
