GuwahatiGujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani was today re-arrested in a new case just after he was granted bail by an Assam court for tweeting on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The court had yesterday reserved its order on the bail application in the tweet case.
The police in Assam’s Barpeta, which had come to arrest Mevani, are yet to say in which case the Gujarat MLA was re-arrested. Mevani was first arrested by an Assam Police team from Palanpur in Gujarat on Thursday after a local BJP leader from Kokrajhar in Assam filed a complaint against him. Mevani (a critic of PM Modi) has called his arrest “vendetta politics by the PMO (Prime Minister’s Office).”

Mevani told reporters today, “It is a conspiracy of BJP and RSS. He has done this to tarnish my image. They are doing this systematically. They did it with Rohit Vemula, they did it with Chandrashekhar Azad, now they are targeting me.
The 41-year-old has been charged with criminal conspiracy, offenses relating to a place of worship, hurting religious sentiments and abetting breach of the peace. In his complaint, BJP leader Arup Kumar De has alleged that Mevani’s tweet creates the possibility of inciting a section of the public belonging to a certain community.
The Congress has alleged that the arrests – within 24 hours of the complaint – were made keeping in mind the upcoming assembly elections in Gujarat. The BJP is ruling Gujarat since 1995.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi tweeted, “Modi ji, you can try to quell dissent by abusing the state machinery. But you can never capture the truth. Let us inform that independent MLA from Vadgam seat of Banaskantha, Mevani had said that he would contest the next election as a Congress candidate.
