At the beginning of March, Ukrainian refugee Svitlana Mazurenko and her 16-year-old daughter Sofia stood on the frozen border in Medyce, Poland, and did not even know whether to turn right or left on the dirt road for safety. Coincidence wished them, brought them to the distant unknown town of Roudnice nad Labem – and also to the comfortable life of a rich Czech businessman and hit lyricist Michal Horáček.

Even though Russian rockets are roaring over the Ukrainian capital again, the woman has given up safety in the Czech Republic and is heading back home to Kiev with her two teenage children. A rough and long journey awaits them – first by bus to Lviv and then by war-torn Ukraine by train all the way home. They have to catch everything in the curfew, otherwise they will get stuck at one of the stations.

I want to go back and help rebuild the Ukrainian economy, the country must function as much as possible to be strong. I also want to help people who have lost everything. We cannot give up this war. We can’t give up on Donbas either. When we do that, it never ends. The Russians will return in two or three years and will want more. We do not want to go back to Soviet times.

Svitlana Mazurenko, a refugee from Kiev

Svitlana will spend Orthodox Easter, a holiday resurrected a week from the West, with her husband Ruslan, who has so far repaired tanks in Kiev – those confiscated from the Russians and even those sent to the Ukrainian defenders by the Czech government. Pasku, a Ukrainian “sweetheart”, is being fed at home, in a barracks where they still have a missile shelter in the basement.

The long war before us

On the run before the war was a forty-five-year-old woman who works in Ukraine as an accountant for forty days. She left – first only with her daughter – after the family spent a week shelling Kiev in the basement of their house. Fifteen-year-old Timothy, who originally wanted to stay in Kiev with his father, later joined them.

But at the beginning of the Russian invasion, no one knew what could happen next.

“Now everything indicates that the war will be long, but the fight will be mainly on Donbas. We are very grateful that we were able to stay in the Czech Republic, calm down and think about what to do next. But we want to come back, “Svitlana describes the Connexionblog. She actually decided to return home at the first possible opportunity. Just as the Russians withdrew from the Kiev area after the heroic performance of Ukrainian soldiers.

The family is lucky to have a place to return. Their house is still standing. It is also on the outskirts of Kiev, similar to the suburbs of Bucha or Irpin, but on the happier side. Russian troops did not pass through it, leaving mass graves, civilian corpses on the street, and burned homes.

The reason she returns is not just longing for her family. “I want to go back and help rebuild the Ukrainian economy, the country needs to function as much as possible to be strong. I also want to help people who have lost everything, “adds Svitlana. For a fragile, small woman, whom the Czechs knew near her mainly as a devoted mother, she may be a little surprised when it comes to war tactics. “We cannot give up this war. We can’t give up on Donbas either. When we do that, it never ends. The Russians will return in two or three years and will want more. We do not want to go back to Soviet times, “he adds. She also has a personal mission at home in Ukraine – to work in a sheltered home where her brother, who suffers from Down syndrome, lives.

Ukrainian street dance

Almost 300,000 people have fled to the Czech Republic from Ukraine since February 24, when the Russian aggression in Ukraine began, mostly mothers with children. After all, men of combat age must remain in the country under a yellow-blue flag by order of the government. The Czechia has opened its arms quite unconditionally – Ukrainian refugees are entitled to financial support, access to the labor market and health insurance, all for at least a year.

But despite the favorable living conditions, not everything is easy for Ukrainian refugees. For Svitlana, for example, it was a problem to get a job – allegedly mainly due to the language barrier. The search for an apartment that they wanted to rent in Prague ended in failure due to better access to job opportunities and possibly schools for children. Apartment owners and real estate agencies simply did not rush into rent for a Ukrainian family.

Her 16-year-old daughter Sofia became Svitlana’s guide in a foreign-language Czech Republic. Little is different from their “western” peers. She loves fashion, she likes to dance modern street dance, she speaks English and dreams of a doctor’s career. She is looking abroad to the west of Ukraine, but she would like to return there one day, for example, as a promising student, not a war refugee.

“We know that the shelling continues because the Ukrainian skies are not closed, the war continues. Since our decision to return, my mother has considered all the circumstances every second, she is worried about our safety, but I have no doubt, “says Sofia.

Horáček: They are our people

At home, the girl is mainly looking forward to hugging her relatives, neighbors and friends. They say they are not alone in returning. Her classmates are also returning from other European countries. Ukrainian children and teenagers often have school on the run online, as is Sofia. Now he mainly intends to study, because he is already going to university. “When I’m home, I’ll just look at everything and everyone, because I haven’t seen them in a long time. I want to see all the places where we used to walk and where we were happy, “he adds.

In Kiev, their father, whom they have not seen for a month and a half, is waiting for them. But every evening in Roudnice they waited for his phone call from the shelled Kiev. He is an engineer, after the beginning of the war he switched to working with military equipment for the Ukrainian army.

“According to the latest information from Ukraine, some companies are starting to resume operations, but at the same time, at least until June, people do not have to return to work in Kiev. Until then, we will do what is necessary, “says mother Svitlana.

Mazurenko does not spare words of gratitude to the Czech Republic – they thank him for his kind reception. They assume that most Ukrainians, like them, will want to return home when the situation allows and if they have where. “In the Czech Republic, we had everything we needed. The people here were very kind to us and we felt safe, “says Sofia about her stay in the Czech Republic.

As mentioned above, after a random call, they found refuge with Michal Horáček. “Svitlana, Sofi and Timo were quiet, modest and unpretentious. They tried hard not to burden us in the slightest. They also tried to smile, “says Horáček.

It is said that he learned from the Ukrainian woman, who lives in Roudnice and with whom Mazurenkovy met, that they were suffering the consequences of the stress of the war. He considers the family that found asylum with him to be “his” people. “Our Ukrainians have deepened my belief in the value of shared humanity, which ignores the diversity of languages but recognizes and values goodwill, education, culture and belief in the truth,” he added.
