New Delhi, April 23. Rajiv Kumar has resigned from the post of Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog. Following his sudden resignation, the government on Friday appointed Suman K Berry as the Deputy Chairman of NITI Aayog. An official order said Berry would take over from May 1, 2022. Rajiv Kumar’s term ends on April 30.

Vice-Chairman of NITI Aayog appointed in 2017
Rajeev Kumar is an eminent economist. He took over as the vice-chairman of NITI Aayog in August 2017 after the then VC Arvind Panagariya resigned from the government think-tank to return to academics. According to the order, Kumar’s resignation has been accepted and he will be relieved from the post with effect from April 30.

Rajiv Kumar played a key role in policy formulation of NITI Aayog with focus on Agriculture, Asset Monetization, Disinvestment, Program for Aspirational Districts and Electric Vehicles. Kumar has a D.Phil in Economics from Oxford University and a PhD from Lucknow University. He was also a Senior Fellow at the Center for Policy Research (CPR).
Profile of Suman’s Berry
Berry had earlier served as the Director General (Chief Executive) of the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), New Delhi. He has also been a member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, the Statistical Commission and the Technical Advisory Committee of the Reserve Bank of India on Monetary Policy. Prior to NCAER, Berry has been with the World Bank in Washington DC. His areas of work include the macroeconomy, financial markets and public debt management, with a focus on Latin America. He graduated in Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Magdalen College, University of Oxford, and earned a master’s degree in Public Affairs (MPA) from Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. In 2010, Berry was a member of the then PM Manmohan Singh’s Economic Advisory Council, fighting for the RBI to tighten its monetary policy to curb rising inflation.
