damage done in seconds
Investing in crypto can be extremely financially rewarding but it can also lead to heartbreak due to its reliance on mobile and internet technology. Dominic Ecowon understands this very well as he lost $6,50,000 (Rs 4.97 crore) of crypto assets in a matter of seconds due to a small mistake on his iPhone.

why the loss
According to Ecovone, he had kept all his valuable NFTs in a digital wallet and as a result he suffered a major financial blow. Using the less popular iCloud hack, scammers were able to access their digital assets held in the wallet.

got a call
Dominic said he received a call from a number that was identified on his caller ID as ‘Apple’. When he called back the number, asked for a code from him which was sent to his phone. And seconds later, his entire digital wallet was emptied. He was suspected of fraud. But he believed them. He asked for a code that was sent to his phone and 2 seconds later his entire MetaMask was wiped off.

Ignore call many times
Dominic said he picked up the call from the suspected ‘Apple’ number thinking it was a fraud. He said he ignored the call several times until he noticed ‘Apple Inc’ on the caller ID. According to him, the scammer posed as a member of Apple’s technical team and said that some manipulation had taken place in his account. In another tweet, Dominic said that hackers gained access to his 12-word ‘seed phrase’, which is usually provided by the MetaMask digital wallet. It should not be shared with anyone.

where did the mistake happen
He didn’t know that Metamask automatically stores seed phrase files on iCloud. Dominic explained the loss to MetaMask in a series of tweets. In response, MetaTask said that if you have enabled iCloud Backup for app data, it will include your password-encrypted MetaMask Vault. You should also avoid any such call and do not share any information with anyone.
