Where is this ‘hell’s door’
There is a place in the Karakum Desert of Turkmenistan which is called the Gateway to Hell/Gates of Hell. It is located at a distance of 260 km from Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan. The 60 meters wide and 20 meters deep ‘Darwar of Hell’ has been burning continuously since the 70s. It is believed that due to the Soviet drilling operation in 1971, the flames arose here, but till date what is the real reason for this fire, it is not known. Local residents say that this crater dates back to the 1960s but it caught fire in the 1980s.

What happened after the drilling of the Soviets?
According to a report published in The Week, Soviet scientists were drilling for oil in the desert. During this, natural gas was detected and the ground sank inwards. After this three sinkholes were formed from which natural gas started leaking. To stop the gas leak, scientists set fire to a pit, thinking that it would stop the leak. Since that day fire is burning in the door of hell. Significantly, thousands of tourists come annually to see the door of hell.
The man who entered the burning fire
Canadian explorer George Kourounis was the first to go down through the gates of hell. During a conversation with National Geographic, he said, ‘There was a lot of fire below, day or night it always keeps burning. If you stand on the edge, you will hear the sound of flames. Due to fire, the temperature rises so much that it is impossible to bear. There are two big flames right in the center, probably there would have been drilling for natural gas. Kourounis had descended into the continuously burning fire crater with full preparation. Equipment included a custom made harness made from Kevlar, a fire resistant rope and a heat-resistant suit. Apart from this, he also had a Heat Probe. Through this, wireless transmission was being done to the laptop kept on the edge of the fire crater. Kourounis went deep inside the burning pit and collected soil samples. After examining the soil, scientists found some microorganisms in the blazing fire. The most important thing is that they were not found outside the pit.

The President said, ‘We are losing natural resources from which huge profits can be made and which can be used to improve people’s lives.’ Let us tell you that this is not the first time that someone has tried to extinguish the fire. Even before this, President Berdymukhamedov had given instructions to find a way to get rid of this fire, but scientists have not found any way till date. Berdymukhamedov has been the President of Turkmenistan since 2006 and is almost cut off from the rest of the world.
