Political journey
Shubhendu Adhikari’s political career began with the Indian National Congress (INC). In the year 1995, the officer was elected a councilor of Congress for the first time in the municipality. However, he then took membership of the Trinamool Congress. It is said that in the 2006 assembly elections, Shubhendu Adhikari won the election from the Kathi Dakshin seat for the first time. After this he reached the Lok Sabha in 2009 and in 2014 also kept his hold strong. However, he contested from Nandigram assembly seat in 2016 and won.

Officer family dominates in Medinipur
As time passed, Shubhendu Adhikari’s grip in politics became stronger. Engaged in strengthening the Trinamool with a family legacy, Shubhendu became close to Mamata and was perceived as his right hand. Shubhir Adhikari, Shubhendu’s father, became an MLA from the Kanthi South Assembly seat in 1982 on a Congress ticket. He later joined the Trinamool Congress and is currently representing the Kathi Lok Sabha seat. Not only this, Shubendu’s brother Dibyendu is an MP from Tamluk Lok Sabha seat. While a brother Saumyendu, who was the president of the Kanthi Municipality, has also joined the BJP.
The influence of officer family is in these districts
The official family dominates most of the seats in East Medinipur, West Medinipur, Bankura, Purulia, Murshidabad and Malda. By the way, the Nandigram movement needed the Trinamool to hold power, Shubhendu Adhikari had an important role in it.
