KINSHASA – Italian Ambassador to Congo, Luca Attanasio was killed in an attack on a UN convoy in eastern Congo. The attack also killed two other people.
Virunga National Park administrators said the attack, initially known to be an attempted kidnapping, took place near the town of Kanyamahoro, a few kilometers from the regional capital Goma.

“It is with great sadness that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the deaths of the Italian Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Luca Attanasio, and a policeman from the Carabinieri in Goma,” the ministry said.
“The ambassador and the soldiers were traveling by car in the convoy of MONUSCO, the United Nations Organization for Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo,” he continued, as reported by Reuters on Monday (22/2/2021).

Dozens of armed groups operate in and around Virunga, which lies along Congo’s border with Rwanda and Uganda. Park rangers have been attacked repeatedly, including six people who died in raids last month.
